TIRE RECYCLING

Since 1998, Nova Scotia's Used Tire Management Program has been recovering on-road motor vehicle tires. More than one million used tires are collected and diverted from the province's landfills each year.

How It Works

Nova Scotians can return up to four tires at a time, to any tire retailer in the province, FREE OF CHARGE. Unwanted or worn-out tires should be left at your tire retailer when you buy new tires. Tires must be off the rim and free of mud and debris.

What's Included:

  • Car and truck tires
  • Motorcycle tires
  • Camper tires
  • Trailer tires

What's NOT Included:

  • Tires larger than 24.5 inches
  • Off-road tires from All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs)
  • Tires from farming and other heavy equipment

Contact your local municipality for information on the proper disposal of these types of tires.

Environmental Handling Fees

When a new tire is purchased in Nova Scotia, a one-time environmental fee is applied at the point of sale. Retailers submit the fee to RRFB Nova Scotia to support the costs of tire collection and processing. The fee is dependent on the size and type of tire purchased:

All passenger tires
(including all on-road motorcycle, camper and trailer tires)
$3.00/tire
Light truck tires not exceeding 17”$3.00/tire
Light truck tires exceeding 17”$9.00/tire
Highway truck, tractor, and trailer tires not exceeding 24.5”$9.00/tire

Interesting Facts

Used tires are processed into Tire Derived Aggregate (TDA), a multi-purpose product that has a variety of uses including construction and engineering. To learn more, visit RRFB Nova Scotia's Tire Derived Aggregate page.

Over 11 million tires have been recycled since the Used Tire Management Program began in 1998!
